Family Photo Tips with Toddlers:

Here’s How to Make It Fun and Real

Let’s be honest. Finding real family photo tips with toddlers can feel impossible, right? Family photos sound lovely until your toddler decides today is the day for a snack strike or a full-blown meltdown. If you’re already feeling a little anxious just thinking about it, know that you are absolutely not alone. As your Lake Tahoe family photographer (who also raised a son in Truckee!), I’ve been there.

With over 20 years of experience photographing families around Lake Tahoe and raising my own son right here in Truckee, I’ve learned what truly helps a photo session feel relaxed, meaningful, and full of genuine smiles. Whether you are visiting our beautiful area or are a Truckee local looking to document your unique season of life, here are five simple family photo tips with toddlers to help your next session feel more like a fun memory than a stressful to-do.

1. Let’s Normalize the “Little Bribe”

Yes, you heard me! One of my favorite families once brought gummy vitamins to their session and playfully called them “photo treats.” Total win! It could be a tiny, special toy, a favorite (non-messy!) snack, or the thrilling promise of ice cream afterward. It doesn’t have to be sugary, just something that feels special and offers a little incentive for those tiny humans.

2. Set the Tone for Fun

Kids are incredibly perceptive. If your energy says, “This is going to be stressful,” your kids will absolutely feel it. Instead, treat the session like a family adventure! Let them know we’re going to play, explore, and simply be together while I capture some photos along the way. Keep it light, simple, and exciting.

One little family photo tip with toddlers I love to share: try skipping the phrase “say cheese.” It tends to bring out stiff smiles and wide, unnatural eyes. The most heartfelt expressions usually come from genuine connection, a little bit of playful interaction, and just allowing everyone to be in the moment. Let them be themselves; I’ll guide us the rest of the way.

3. Let Kids Be Kids (Seriously!)

If your toddler wants to run, jump, or twirl, my answer is always: let them! Some of the most heart-melting images come from those unscripted, in the moment giggles and joyful movements. I never expect anyone to sit perfectly still or pose rigidly. My approach is to meet your kids right where they are and work with their amazing energy. These are the moments you’ll truly cherish.

4. Leave Expectations at the Door

The very best thing you can do for a stress-free family photos session with little ones is to come with an open heart and no pressure. This is just a small, beautiful chapter in your family’s story, and it deserves to be documented just as it is imperfections and all. There’s absolutely no need for perfect poses or perfectly behaved children. Just focus on being together and enjoying your time.

5. Trust the Process (That’s My Job!)

As an experienced Truckee family photographer, I know how to read the room, get a genuine laugh, and capture the real stuff. I’m truly not worried about a little mess or a sudden mood swing. I’ve been doing this a long time, and I promise you, I always find the magic. Your only job is to relax, lean into the moment, and simply enjoy your people.

At the end of the day, these photos aren’t about perfect outfits or flawless behavior. They are about presence, love, and the beautiful, unfolding story you are living right now. And that story is already perfectly beautiful.
