This Donner Summit family session was photographed during fall golden hour, one of the most beautiful times of year for Tahoe family photos.
Some families hold a special place in my heart, and this one is definitely one of them. I first photographed their wedding many moons ago at the Hyatt on Lake Tahoe over Memorial Day weekend. It was a huge celebration with a live band, singing, and a packed dance floor. Funny thing is, after more than 600 weddings, I still remember so many of them. Photographers spend far more time with a couple than just their wedding day. There are over sixty hours after the event dedicated to editing, color work, album design, and crafting those keepsakes that tell the story beautifully.

Now, years later, seeing them as parents to two adventurous boys makes it all come full circle. For this Donner Summit family session, I chose the location because I knew the boys would love to explore and because I had not been there since early summer. Returning reminded me just how much I love this spot. So many locations to discover for Tahoe family photos and this is why I get to photograph my families year after year.

The texture of the granite, the warmth of the pines, and the golden light bouncing off the rocks create such a beautiful backdrop. Donner Summit is one of my favorite locations in Tahoe, not just for the views but for all the textures. Every turn offers something new.
We timed our session for golden hour when the light hits just right across the peaks. The boys ran, climbed, and laughed, completely in their element. That energy and curiosity are exactly what I hope to capture in family portraits, the small, fleeting moments that feel completely real.
These are the kinds of sessions that remind me why I love photographing families over time. Watching their stories unfold, from weddings to growing families, is the most rewarding part of what I do.
